Merri Heikkilä - Circus artist
Merri began his circus career in the youth circus Sorin Sirkus in 2001 and participated in their Christmas shows and other performances between years 2008-2013. In 2017 he graduated from Codarts, University of arts, in the Netherlands with the Bachelors decree in circus arts.
After Graduating, he’s been working on smaller individual projects, as well as been a founding member in two new circus collectives. Sirkum Polaris is a Finnish contemporary circus company founded in 2015 and their first show Kulovalkea had its premiere in October 2023.
In 2017 Merri also founded the circus collective the Nordic Council together with two other Nordic circus artists Jakob Jacobsson and Bjarni Árnasson. Their first show Three men from the North premiered in 2019. In February 2022 they began the creation for a new show Häppy Hour, which got its premiere in 2024 and is still touring.
In spring 2020 Merri began working with circus company Nuua on their new creation Meanwhile, which premiered in 2022. Currently he works closely with their other future projects as well.
Since 2025 Merri has been part of Sysäys Ry together with dance artist Tuulia Soininen and circus artist Onni Toivonen. On top of running a creation space in Orivesi, Finland they organize yearly Sysäys Festival as well as shows and events in Orivesi and nearby areas.
In his work Merri uses his skills in object manipulation and movement, as well as elements of physical theater, to create a unique experiences for the audience. He believes that circus has the ability to create fantastical worlds that can surprise and inspire viewers despite their cultural or social backgrounds.
